No. 4 toughest QB the Jaguars will face in 2022 – Matt Ryan, QB

General manager Chris Ballard is a pretty good talent evaluator who constantly replenishes the Indianapolis Colts’ roster with talent. However, he hasn’t been able to get the quarterback position right since Andrew Luck retired. Indy gave Jacoby Brissett a shot in 2019 but he wasn’t an answer.

The Colts turned to Philip Rivers in 2020 but he was in the twilight of his career and they were only able to squeeze one year out of him. They then traded for Carson Wentz in 2021. It took Ballard and head coach Frank Reich (his offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles) just one season to realize Wentz wasn’t a fit in Indianapolis and send him packing to the Washington Commanders earlier this year.

To replace the second overall pick in the 2016 draft, the Colts acquired Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons. Ryan is not a youngling anymore but he’s still a pretty efficient quarterback that thrived in A-Town despite the fact that he didn’t have a great supporting cast. Last year, the Falcons traded Julio Jones to the Tennesse Titans and wide receiver Calvin Ridley retired in the middle of the season. Still, Ryan went on to complete 67 percent of his passes with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions with tight end Kyle Pitts, wide receiver Russell Gage, and running back/receiver Cordarrelle Patterson as his top weapons.

In Indianapolis, Ryan will throw passes to Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie Alec Pierce. He’s joining a team that was one good quarterback away from qualifying for the postseason last year.
