Jaguars’ dream coaching hire No. 4 – Former Lions HC Jim Caldwell.

While the Jaguars may not end up interviewing all the candidates on their list of potential head coaches, they should be able to check Jim Caldwell’s box. While there hasn’t been any recent news, Ian Rapoport reported the Jags were interested in talking to him.

Caldwell was the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts back in Super Bowl 44. While Indy lost to New Orleans Saints, playing in the championship game is nothing to scoff at. He would later earn a Super Bowl ring as the offensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens and anywhere he’s gone, his quarterbacks have played at a high level.

Having said that, Caldwell’s biggest achievement is without a doubt winning as the head coach of the Detroit Lions. Both the Lions and the Jaguars are two of the most dysfunctional franchises in the NFL. That Caldwell was able to get Detroit twice to the playoffs in four years is a sign of how much of an impact he had as their head coach.

Once Caldwell left, his replacement, Matt Patricia, couldn’t recreate his success and left the team in worse condition than when he took over. Dan Campbell may eventually be able to right the ship but there’s no doubt the Lions made a mistake when they fired him. As the old adage goes, “you don’t know what you have until you lose it”: Detroit didn’t know they had an outstanding head coach in Caldwell.
