Jaguars’ dream coaching hire No. 3 – Steelers HC Mike Tomlin.

Out of all the dream hires the Jaguars could make, this is the one with the lowest odds, and Mike Tomlin himself will tell you that, “never say never but never“. He said that when he was asked about the opening at USC but it could also apply to any vacancies in the NFL. In spite of that, the Jaguars should give him a call IF the Pittsburgh Steelers were to cut ties with him.

Back when Tomlin became the head coach of the Steelers, talking heads wondered why he got the job over then-offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt. Looking back, that was the kind of hot take that has gone freezing cold several years later, as Pittsburgh has gone on to be one of the most consistent teams in the NFL since he landed the job.

Tomlin is the kind of no-nonsense head coach that will get his players in a position to succeed. Regardless of whom he’s worked with, he’s never had a losing season in Pittsburgh. Not having to worry about the quarterback position due to the presence of Ben Roethlisberger has certainly helped but he’s not the reason why he’s been so successful. He’s done a great job managing the roster during his tenure. Keep in mind that Tomlin has done something no other NFL head coach has been able to do: Put up with wide receiver Antonio Brown for several years.

You could say Tomlin is the anti-Urban Meyer. He will never get the spotlight for negative reasons. In Jacksonville, he could install the kind of culture the Jaguars have been missing over the last ten years, and precisely because of that, the Steelers might not be in a hurry to move on with him. But if the opportunity arises, the Jags need to get in touch with him.
