No. 4 HC the Jaguars could have hired in 2020 – Brandon Staley.

Brandon Staley prove this year that you don’t need someone who is proficient with Xs and O’s to field a successful offense. Staley was a linebackers coordinator for Vic Fangio back in Denver, and later become the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams in 2020. He only spent one year on the job and has quickly shown why.

Back when the Los Angeles Chargers hired Staley, general Tom Telesco said the Bolts’ new head coach thrived at conveying and adjusting his concepts to players. That’s the kind of skillset you want from a leader. You have surely run into people that are experts in their respective fields but struggle to get their points across. A good NFL head coach will adapt to his players, not the other way around. Urban Meyer tried to install his vision but never really tweaked it for the pro game.

Staley also knew his forte was the defensive side of the ball, that’s why he hired offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi to oversee quarterback Justin Herbert’s development in Year 2. The decision paid off as the Oregon product earned the first Pro Bowl designation of his NFL career.

You could argue that Staley took over a roster that was already built but his predecessor, Anthony Lynn, wasn’t able to get the most out of it. It’s been less than a year, but it looks like the Chargers got the right man to coach their team.
