No. 3 HC the Jaguars could have hired in 2020 – David Culley.

David Culley deserves plenty of credit for what he’s done as the head coach of the Houston Texans. He wasn’t at the top of other teams’ wish lists and inherited a less-than-ideal situation.

Over the past months, Culley has had to deal with a wide range of issues that are out of his control and above his pay grade. Houston didn’t have picks in the first two rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft. Also, the team was in a cap crunch thanks to a series of bad contracts former head coach Bill O’Brien made.

If that wasn’t enough, quarterback Deshaun Watson took a stand and said he didn’t want to play in Houston any longer. Moreover, the 2017 first-round pick is facing several lawsuits that claim sexual misconduct. Despite all the drama surrounding the Texans, they somehow are 3-11 and that’s thanks to Culley.

What makes his tenure even more impressive is that before 2021, he wasn’t an up-and-coming candidate to land a head coaching job. He was the Baltimore Ravens’ assistant head coach and passing game coordinator from 2019 to 2020. Before that, he was the Buffalo Bills quarterbacks coach.

Culley may end up being one and done as the head coach of the Texans but one thing is clear, he’s undeterred by all the losing in Houston and has shown his ability to take punches is second to none. The Jaguars needed that kind of resilience from Meyer.
