3. Jaguars player that must shine vs. the 49ers – Laviska Shenault Jr.

It’s easy to overreact when an early-round pick doesn’t have the impact the team that drafted him expected. Just like Tyson Campbell has shown progress in recent weeks, wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. sits on the other end of the spectrum, failing to make an impact in recent weeks.

Since Week 5, Viska has hauled in just 16 receptions for 164 with no touchdowns. Also, he’s been credited with five drops this season. Not having DJ Chark JR. in the lineup after he suffered a fracture injury in Week 4 has certainly played a role in Shenaults’ drop in production. Nevertheless, the Jaguars’ coaching staff needs to do a better job of putting their players in a position to succeed.

Having said that, Shenault deserves some of the blame for his lack of impact, he’s had the chance to make plays but has fallen short. He will have a chance to bounce back against the 49ers in Week 11. The Jaguars have him in different ways and not just those short passes near the line of scrimmage. The 2020 second-round pick is great at breaking tackles and generating yards after contact but he can also get deep.

The Jags need to consider taking a few shots downfield, something they haven’t done often in recent weeks. Of course, he would need to come down with those. Giving Shenault a few carries every game could also boost his productivity on the football field.
