2. Jaguars player that must shine vs. the 49ers – CB Tyson Campbell

From taking running back Travis Etienne with the 25th overall pick to the lack of impact the rookie class has had, most of the Jaguars’ 2021 draft picks have been heavily scrutinized. In particular, the Tyson Campbell pick didn’t look great at the start of the season but has displayed progress over the last few weeks.

In the last two games, Campbell has given up five receptions on nine targets for 72 yards and no touchdowns. In Week 10, he defensed a pass on third-and-4 that forced the Colts to punt the ball in the next play. Keep in mind that not every rookie develops at the same rate and it took the former Georgia Bulldog a bit to find his footing in the NFL.

Back in the preseason, Campbell gave up several big plays but was pressed into the starting lineup after Tre Herndon suffered an MCL injury. He had a less-than-stellar NFL debut in Week 1, allowing five targets on five receptions for 80 yards. This kind of performance cast doubt in the decision to draft him 33rd overall but he’s shown that the trust the coaching staff has placed in him isn’t misplaced. Even though he’s struggled at times, his role on defense hasn’t decreased.

Cornerback Shaquill Griffin will probably travel with 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, so Campbell will be tasked with covering Brandon Aiyuk.
