Progress isn't linear. No player may exemplify that better than Trevor Lawrence, who's experienced several ups and downs throughout his career. That said, there's no doubt he's brought much-needed stability behind center for the Jacksonville Jaguars. On top of that, he's gotten much better the past three years, which coincidentally is his biggest source of pride.

Lawrence met with the local media on Day 13 of training camp and talked about why his improvement is the thing that makes him the most proud. This was noteworthy because he says he had never been asked that. The reporter behind the question was Gus Logue of Big Cat Country.

"I've gotten better every year. There's been times, there's been plays where it doesn't look like it, you're gonna have bad plays in your career, and that's gonna happen," Lawrence told the media. "But I've gotten better every year. I'm talking about stuff I need to get better at, and those are things I know I need to get better at, and I'm working on it moving forward."

Lawrence continued, "But as far as just accuracy, giving guys a chance, throwing the ball downfield, that was something I didn't do well at all my rookie year, and I think I've gotten better at that. Just knowing the system, making this the smart play, that's been a big improvement for me. Staying on schedule is something I learned to do, especially last year, taking the early, easy completions, early games first thing down, second along, just getting the ball in play, whatever the situations are."

I've gotten better situationally, that can still improve. There's been times last year where I didn't play well situationally, where I made some mistakes or turn it over or whatever. There's always everything is a learning experience. But those are some things, just to think off the top of my head."

The first overall pick in 2021, Lawrence had an underwhelming rookie season, throwing just 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. In his defense, his unremarkable play was the result of having a subpar supporting cast and playing for Urban Meyer, who had no idea what he was doing. With Doug Pederson taking over the Jaguars, the former Clemson Tiger got noticeably better.

By the end of 2022, Lawrence was playing like a top-10 quarterback. Unfortunately, injuries stalled his growth, and even regressed last year. On the bright side, he's now healthy and looking to bounce back in 2024. Here's his full conversation with the local media. He discusses his growth at around the 14:28 mark.

Trevor Lawrence has dealt with the ebbs and flows of being an NFL QB

It's easy to forget it but football players are people too because they're asked to perform at a high level in the NFL level. In Trevor Lawrence's case, he's always had a laid-back attitude and rarely seems to get flustered. His personality was seen as a potential red flag heading into the draft, but you could even make the case that he's thrived precisely because of it.

The Jaguars, for their part, don't seem concerned about it one bit. Quite the contrary. To them, Lawrence is their guy behind center, and their decision to give him a massive contract extension that makes him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the NFL is proof of it.

Ultimately, it's great to see that Lawrence is proud of the progress he's made. Other quarterbacks might not have been able to recover from the struggles he experienced as a rookie but he did and the Jaguars are better because of it.
