3 overhyped Jacksonville Jaguars players fans need to pump the brakes on
No. 1 Jaguars player fans need to pump the brakes on: Foyesade Oluokun
Let's make something clear. Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun's impact goes beyond the football field. Just recently, head coach Doug Pederson excused most players from attending mandatory workouts but Foye showed up anyways to make sure he gave a helping hand to his teammates. That's what leaders do and it wouldn't be shocking if he's named team captain for the second consecutive year.
On the field, Oluokun is also pretty good. He's logged more than 100 tackles in a season for three straight years and led the league in that category the past two seasons. With that out of the way, the ESPN staff just drew up a list of the best off-linebackers in the league and the Yale product didn't make the cut. While this might seem surprising at first sight, it really isn't.
If it accounts for something, Oluokun did get an honorable mention. Also, Davin White might have not deserved to get the nod but that's beside the point. Most of the linebackers that did make the list — Fred Wagner, Raquon Smith, Tremaine Edwards, and Dre Greenwald — are good in coverage, something Oluokun has struggled with throughout his career. Just last year, he gave up an 80.7 percent completion rate when targeted, not very different from his career average of 79.9 percent of passes allowed.
Does that make Oluokun a bad player? Not at all. Oluokun is a key cog in the Jaguars' defense but his not-so-great coverage skills must be acknowledged when discussing what he brings and doesn't bring to the table when talking about the top off-linebackers in the league.
