Back in the offseason, the Jacksonville Jaguars realized that their depth at quarterback left much to be desired, and things didn't get any better in the preseason. This led the team to trade for Quinn Ewers just before the roster cutdown deadline to remedy the issue.
But since the team traded for Ewers just before the regular season, he wasn't ready to step in as the primary backup behind Trevor Lawrence. Fortunately, Jacksonville managed to hold on to Nick Mullens, who was QB2 last year, on the practice squad.
While Ewers got acclimated in Duval, Mullens was promoted to the active roster via standard elevation in the first two games of this season. However, the Jags didn't promote him for Week 3, meaning that Ewers will most likely suit up against the New England Patriots. With this in mind, here's what you need to know for the Jaguars game against New England.

Now, it's one thing to be active on game day, and a whole different one to actually get playing time. So unless Trevor Lawrence gets hurt ** knocks on wood ** or the outcome of the game is decided by the fourth quarter, Quinn Ewers won't step onto the football field. That said, the fact that Nick Mullens wasn't promoted in Week 3 shows that Ewers is making strides in his onboarding.
On a related note, linebacker Jalen McLeod was the only player from the practice squad that the Jags elevated to the active roster. This will be the second week in a row that he gets the nod. The former Auburn Tiger didn't play any snaps on defense in the loss to the Denver Broncos, though, but appeared on 10 snaps on special teams. He could have a similar role against the Patriots.
Circling back to Ewers, we should have an idea of who'll be inactive for the game. Rookie defensive tackle Albert Regis earned the doubtful designation for the game with an elbow injury after being limited in practice Friday.
If Regis manages to be active, he probably won't get much playing time. He's registered a combined 18 snaps on defense the past two games. That said, he'll most likely be inactive. Ditto wide receiver CJ Williams, tight end Tanner Koziol, offensive lineman Daniel Faalele, and safety Jalen Huskey, and maybe linebacker Jack Kiser. None of them suit up in Week 2.

Jaguars inactives vs. the Patriots in Week 3

Both the Jags and New England are 1-1 ahead of the game, but Jacksonville is a 2.5-point favorite, most likely because it's the home team.
With a win, the Jags can keep their lead in the AFC South. All four teams in the division lost in Week 2.
