The Jacksonville Jaguars weren't enthused about their depth at quarterback, so they acquired Quinn Ewers from the Miami Dolphins in return for a sixth-round selection in 2028. The Jags would later soften the cost of the deal when they traded tight end Hunter Long and a 2028 seventh-rounder to the Miami Dolphins.
So basically, Jacksonville found their potential long-term backup quarterback in return for a seventh-rounder. On top of that, he's set to make a combined $3.6 million over the next three years, so having him around won't be cost-prohibitive.
When you take everything into account, the Jaguars got a really good deal when they traded for Ewers, but what are they truly getting in the sophomore quarterback? Black & Teal reached out to someone with insight.
What are the Jaguars getting in Quinn Ewers?
B&T had an exchange with Brian Miller of Phin Phanatic, the Fansided site devoted to covering the Dolphins. He argues that Jacksonville acquired a quarterback with intriguing upside, noting that he flashed potential in three starts to close out the 2025 season. Here's the skinny.
"Quinn Ewers looked promising in the three starts to close out the 2025 season when the Dolphins benched Tua Tagovailoa. That led to speculation that he would get a chance to compete for the same job this year," Miller told the B&T. "His offseason practices were great, but when camp arrived, it all changed. He was inconsistent, throwing what seemed like at least one interception a practice. He just didn’t seem close to the same player he was becoming. A change of scenery will help."
As Miller noted, Ewers was the backup behind Tua Tagovailoa last year. Although a new regime took over in 2026, the San Antonio, Texas native was given a chance to compete. Unfortunately, he failed to make an impression, which is why Miami kicked him to the curb.
The good news is that Ewers will get a fresh start in Duval. Moreover, he'll get to learn under head coach Liam Coen, who's managed to get the most out of Will Levis, Baker Mayfield, and more recently, Trevor Lawrence.

The Jaguars are confident Quinn Ewers can be QB2 behind Trevor Lawrence
The fact that the Jaguars not only traded for Quinn Ewers but kept him on the 53-man roster is a sign that they believe he'll be an upgrade over Nick Mullens. Moreover, they wouldn't have pulled the trigger if they had believed that either Joey Aguilar or Carter Bradley could have supplanted Mullens as QB2.
On the other hand, Ewers remains a reclamation project, one with upside, but a project nonetheless. The team's brass made a projection based on his tape with the Phins and the Longhorns, but it will ultimately be up to him to put it all together.
Dating back to the offseason program, it was clear that the Jaguars needed to bolster their quarterback depth. They hope that Quinn Ewers can provide a massive boost at the position.
