No. 1 Jaguars player who will turn heads in training camp: Devin Lloyd

33. player. 52. . . . Devin Lloyd, linebacker

Travon Walker has gotten plenty of attention after being drafted first overall in the spring. He will make the switch to outside linebacker in training camp and every mistake he makes will probably be magnified precisely because he was the top pick. The former Georgia Bulldog will certainly go through an adjustment period and he might struggle at times. On the other hand, there’s a chance fellow first-round pick Devin Lloyd will have no trouble getting acclimated to the NFL.

After all, Lloyd won’t be changing positions and he seems like a good bet to be in the Jaguars’ starting lineup opposite Foyesade Oluokun in Week 1 of the regular season. Back at Utah, the California native showed sideline-to-sideline speed and the ability to show the pass rusher. That kind of versatility will ensure he has a role on defense even if fellow Chad Muma also shines in training camp.

Doug Pederson previously said that he wants to see what the rookies can do once they have the pads on but it’s hard not to see Lloyd getting most of the reps in training camp. The fact that the team’s brass traded back into the first round to land the former Ute is telling. Simply, they couldn’t pass up the chance to take him, and it would be puzzling to see him get a reserve role.

Fair or not, Lloyd’s status as a first-round pick will earn him plenty of chances to succeed but based on his talent level, he should make the most of his reps in training camp.
