No. 3 Raiders free agent the Jaguars can sign – Jalen Richard, RB.

What looked like a position of strength for the Jaguars (at least on paper) last year has quickly turned into a need this offseason. That’s right the Jaguars’ top two running backs are coming off serious injuries. Travis Etienne suffered a Lisfranc injury during the preseason and went on to miss his rookie campaign. On the other hand, James Robinson was among the top running backs in the NFL in the first half of the season. However, he suffered a bruised heel in Week 8 and tore his Achilles in Week 16.

If Etienne doesn’t experience any setbacks, he should be back by training camp but Robinson may not be 100 percent by the start of the 2022 season. That’s why the Jags should consider adding depth to their running back room. While they have Carlos Hyde on the roster, they could free up $2 million in cap space if they release him. The team’s brass could then use that money to sign Jalen Richard.

After going undrafted in 2016, Richard signed with the Raiders and quickly made an impact, scoring a 75-yard touchdown run in his first NFL carry. The Southern Miss product has gotten more than 56 carries in a season just once in his six-year career but he’s pretty effective when he tots the rock, averaging 5.0 yards per carry. Moreover, he’s good at pass-blocking and as a receiver out of the backfield.

Signing Richard may not be cost-prohibitive and he would be a superb addition to the Jags’ backfield.
