Jacksonville Jaguars: 5 players who must shine to avoid losing streak
Jacksonville Jaguars player who must shine No. 5 – Trevor Lawrence
Quarterback Trevor Lawrence finally made his pro debut after being drafted by the Jaguars with the top overall pick in the 2021 selection meeting. The former Tiger certainly showed promise against the Texans, completing 28 of 51 passes for 332 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions.
His three interceptions could be attributed to his lack of experience in the NFL and he should get better as the season goes on. Lawrence showed poise and displayed good pocket awareness, constantly moving around to avoid pressure. After the game, he got praise from All-Pro safety Tyrann Mathieu and several talking heads. On the other hand, the rookie acknowledged that he has to play better still has plenty of room for improvement.
In Week 2, Lawrence will face a Broncos’ defense that allowed 312 total yards against the New York Giants in the previous game. Denver has the personnel on defense to match up against the Jaguars’ skill-position players.
The coaching staff needs to decrease the number of times the rookie quarterback drops back after attempting 51 passes in Week 1. Also, head coach Urban Meyer also needs to have a more balanced offense. But Lawrence will have a short margin of error and will need to shine. Otherwise, the team runs the risk of starting the year 0-2. It may not be fair for the rookie passer but the Jaguars need him to play like the top draft pick of the 2021 draft if they want to pull the upset and beat the Broncos.
