Would it make sense for the Jacksonville Jaguars to pursue James Conner?

Just like any other position in free agency, there are going to be all kinds of options at running back. Some of them may benefit from name recognition while others could offer above-average bang for the buck. James Conner isn’t the best running back in the NFL nor the most popular one. However, he’s solid and that’s better than plenty of other running backs in the open market.

A third-round selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, Conner has racked up 532 carries for 2,302 yards and 22 touchdowns. He had his best year in 2018, appearing in 13 games, with 12 starts, and tallying 215 carries for 973 yards and 12 touchdowns. While he’s never reached the 1,000-yard rushing mark, he’s never averaged less than 4.0 yards in a season and if he had had more playing time, his stat sheet would surely look better.

There’s nothing flashy about Conner’s game but he makes up for it by being dependable. He wouldn’t need to be the Jaguars’ top running back, as that role will go to James Robinson. Nevertheless, signing him wouldn’t be cost-prohibitive and could be a solid addition to the Jaguars running back room.
