Time is flying as we are already almost through 5 rounds in the NFL draft and there is a heavy SEC theme to this year’s Jaguars draft class with 4 out of 5 players selected being from the SEC. The trend started on thursday when the Jags selected Florida’s Dante Fowler Jr. with the third pick of the night. Some fans may have expected Leonard Williams to be the choice but Dante Fowler is a perfect scheme fit for the Jaguars defense.
Moving on to friday, the Jaguars picked Alabama running back T.J. Yeldon in the second round and I’m a huge fan of it. Yeldon has the ability to become a feature back, he showed the ability to catch passes out of the backfield, he makes plays once he gets in the open field, and he also can get tough yardage up the middle.
The Jags didn’t stop there though, with their third pick they selected South Carolina guard A.J. Cann, this pick may have been a surprise to some considering the wide receivers who were on the board but I think it makes a lot of sense. The Jaguars want to make improvements to the running game as well as do a better job of protecting Blake Bortles, so i’m perfectly fine with them adding depth to their offensive line.
Moving on to their most recent pick, The Jags selected Florida State wide receiver Rashad Greene, making this the 4th SEC player drafted through 5 rounds. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record but I’m also a huge supporter of this pick. Rashad Greene was extremely consistent in his career at FSU, he was a constant security blanket for Jameis Winston. Some experts considered him one of the smartest wideouts in the draft, I think he is a perfect fit for the slot position and it shouldn’t take him long to translate to the NFL.
How could you not be a fan of David Caldwell targeting the best conference in college football? There is no question that the SEC has the most NFL ready players in college football and of course the Jags close location to SEC teams also helps a ton. I credit David Caldwell as he done a fantastic job so far and with 3 more picks left for the Jags don’t be surprised if another SEC player is headed to Jacksonville.
