Tank Bigsby looked like Fred Taylor with a pair of smash mouth touchdown runs vs. Colts
By Mike Luciano
After the Jacksonville Jaguars got off to a terrible start to their 2024 season following four straight defeats, they were trying to recapture their glory days by wearing their throwback uniforms with the giant jungle cat on the side. In their duel against the Indianapolis Colts, they were able to turn back the clock to the Tom Coughlin days for a brief moment.
The big highlight play of the day may not have come from quarterback Trevor Lawrence, but running back Tank Bigsby. Clad in those "Prowler" throwback uniforms, Bigsby reeled off a run that would have made Fred Taylor proud due to the sheer brutality and splintering force he displayed.
After a punt return set the Jaguars up at the Colts' 18-yard line, Bigsby wasted no time in trying to convert that sterling field position into points. Bigsby not only ran for a touchdown that put the Jaguars up 20-10, but he did so while trucking multiple Colts defenders and barreling into the end zone.
Just a few plays later after a Colts score, Bigsby found even more running room, using a stiff-arm and hard running to slice through the Colts for a 65-yard touchdown that put Jacksonville up 34-20.
Tank Bigsby gives Jaguars TD with powerful road-grading runs
One change the Jaguars have made this year appears to be leaning more on Bigsby and less on starter Travis Etienne. Etienne has just six carries for 17 yards (albeit with a handful of quality receiving plays), while Bigsby has superseded him with 10 carries for 97 yards so far.
While this move could easily backfire on Doug Pederson and the Jags, as Bigsby has less open-field speed and explosiveness than the slippery Etienne, the power that Bigsby can bring to the table makes his nickname quite fitting. A beat-up Indianapolis defense felt his wrath on a rainy day in Jacksonville.
While Bigsby will need a few more of these big plays to show the coaching staff that he is a better option for under-center runs than Etienne, a big play like this at a time when the team needs any sort of positive bounce to wake them up could be a good way for him to earn the respect of Doug Pederson.
