4 top performers from Jaguars win over the Colts
The Jacksonville Jaguars came into this year expecting to be one of the top teams in the NFL. They had a bumpy 1-2 start but have now won three games in a row and are 4-2 which is one of the top records in the AFC.
After their big win over the Indianapolis Colts, the Jaguars are now in sole possession of first place in the AFC South.
After winning it last year following a 2-6 start, it was pretty clear that they had turned the corner. It will be interesting to see how that plays out.
This was their second game and second win over the Colts. It is important for the Jaguars to beat their Division rivals as often as they can. With the Colts playing some really competitive football to start the season, this is a great statement by the Jaguars.
The Jacksonville Jaguars had 4 players stick out above the rest.
A lot of Jaguars players stood out as impressive in this one which always happens in a big win. Winning 37-20 is certainly a large margin of victory. However, these four deserve a little extra praise for their efforts:
1. Trevor Lawrence
The Jacksonville Jaguars should always give credit to Trevor Lawrence whenever they win football games. Having a quarterback like him isn’t a guarantee in this league. Jags fans should know that by now. Even in his not-as-productive games, he makes an impact.
Lawrence completed 20 passes on 30 attempts which is great but he only threw for 181 yards. That isn’t all that good but he moved the ball enough to win the game by 17. He threw a pick but he also had two touchdown passes.
Trevor also used his legs in this one a little bit. He ran the ball three times and got 15 total yards. He isn’t necessarily a running quarterback but he can be mobile enough when needed.
The Jaguars should be thrilled with this effort by their quarterback. Even in games that he just has to manage, he does. As long as he is on the team, and healthy, they have a chance to win.
2. Travis Etienne
Travis Etienne had a breakout season in 2022 but nobody knew how it was going to go for him in 2023. Now, we know it wasn’t a fluke and he is elite. He showed more on Sunday against the Colts.
Etienne ran the ball 18 times and had a total of 55 yards. He wasn’t as productive in terms of yards per carry but he scored two touchdowns. He also made three receptions for 28 yards. Those plays that he can make are very much needed on this team and a big component of their current winning program.
3. Christian Kirk
Christian Kirk may not be the primary target for Trevor Lawrence but he is still a very good one. In this game, he made three receptions and had 49 yards which led all receivers. He only got the ball three times but the 16.3 yards per reception make him look very good.
There are other great skill players on this team which makes it nice to see Kirk get credit because he is still a very important part of the squad. With Calvin Ridley, Evan Engram, and Brenton Strange there, Lawrence has a ton of help.
4. Josh Allen
No, not the Josh Allen who is a superstar quarterback with the Buffalo Bills. Jacksonville’s Josh Allen is a playmaking player on defense that deserves a ton of credit for having such a good game.
Allen made three tackles and had one assist but he also sacked the quarterback once. It was very fun to watch him disrupt the Colts and make an impact. His sack was also a strip sack so it was clear that he was having a good day at that point.
Allen has already tied (7) his total sack number from a year ago and he played in all 17 games. It is pretty clear that a big year is coming up for him.
If Allen can keep making big plays like this, the Jaguars have a true “heart and soul” type of player on their defensive unit. We can only hope that all of this success, for all four of these guys, can continue. Maybe, just maybe, there is even another level they can get to.
