Tre Flowers could be a cut candidate during Jaguars training camp

After the draft, it seemed like the Jaguars' cornerback room could be a weak link in 2024. After all, they released Darious Williams in a cap-saving move and Tyson Campbell was coming off an injury-marred year. The front office did sign Ronald Darby in free agency but the veteran has had trouble staying healthy the past two seasons. Expecting him to miss time next season is reasonable.

Compounding the issue was that Jacksonville chose to neglect the position in the first two rounds of the draft and waited until near the end of the third to address it. Having said that, it looks like things have played out in their favor.

In retrospect, the Jags' decision to draft Jarrian Jones looks great. The former Florida State Seminole was a standout throughout offseason activities and is positioning himself to earn considerable playing time in 2024. By the end of the season, he may have seized a starting job. Add the fact that there will be a handful of players competing for backup jobs and Jacksonville's cornerback room might be in better shape than expected.

Gregory Junior is looking to bounce back after an underwhelming sophomore campaign. He and fellow 2022 draft pick Montaric Brown may be the first in line to compete for snaps behind Campbell Jones, and Darby. Christian Braswell, rookie Deantre Prince, and Tre Flowers will also be in the mix. Of the bunch, Flowers may have the steepest hill to climb.

Flowers, a fifth-round pick in 2018 by the Seattle Seahawks, signed with the Jags this offseason. He appeared in 17 games with three starts for the Atlanta Falcons last year. He also suited up in 26 games for the Cincinnati Bengals after being traded in 2021. Now, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy will be vying for a roster spot in Jacksonville.

Working in his favor is that Flowers played for Jaguars defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen last year. However, competition to make the team will be tough and merely suiting up for Nielsen may not be enough for the Texas native to get the nod.
