4 Jaguars who could be at risk of losing their job after the 2024 NFL Draft
3. Trevis Gipson, defensive end
Trevis Gipson is currently the No. 3 pass rusher on the depth chart mostly but that's mostly by default. The Jaguars don't have any other proven edge rushers behind Trevon Walker and Josh Allen after letting K'Lavon Chaisson and Dawuane Smoot walk in free agency.
Sure, Yasir Abdullah, a fifth-round pick in last year's draft is still in the mix but he's got a long way to go before he gets meaningful playing time. Without many viable alternatives, the Jaguars may feel pressed to take a pass rusher in the draft.
Wide receiver and cornerback are higher on the team's list of needs. However, the front office won't want to pass up the chance to bolster the pass rush in the first round, especially if Dallas Turner or Laiatu Latu are still on the board at No. 17. But even if the Jags want to prioritize other positions in the first round, they could still come out of the draft with a potential starter on Day 2.
Darius Robinson, Adisa Isaac, and Jonah Ellis could all be available when Jacksonville is on the clock at No. 48. For the sake of argument, let's say the Jaguars take any of them. Travon Walker and Josh Allen would still be the primary pass rushers but a rookie could quickly join the rotation. That could hurt Gipson's chances of contributing in 2024.
Gipson isn't a bad player, but he's coming off an underwhelming season. A fourth-round pick by the Chicago Bears in 2020, Gipson registered seven sacks in his sophomore campaign. He experienced a dip in production when he switched to outside linebacker in 2022. He finished that year with just three sacks and was released before the start of the 2023 season. He was claimed off waiver by the Tennessee Titans but didn't do much of note.
There's a chance Gipson will bounce back under defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen. However, he'll face an uphill battle to get a meaningful role if the Jaguars go pass rusher in Rounds 1 or 2.
