3 Jaguars contract extensions that require immediate attention
2. Josh Allen, edge rusher
As good as Andre Cisco has been the past two years, Josh Allen is the Jaguars' undisputable defensive MVP. A first-round pick in 2019, Allen registered 10.5 sacks and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie. Unfortunately, a knee injury hindered his production the following season, limiting him to just eight games and 2.5 sacks.
Expected to bounce back in 2021, Allen had a handful of dominant outings but also disappeared at times. He once again made plays for the Jaguars in 2022 but wasn't consistent enough to join the upper echelon of NFL pass rushers. Rightfully, the front office was hesitant to give him an extension and chose to let him play his rookie contract out.
Allen acknowledged that he didn't play his best football in 2022 in vowed to improve in his fifth year in the NFL. He went on to have a breakout season, registering a team-record 17.5 sacks. Having lived up to his end of the bargain, he wanted the Jags to give him an extension. However, Trent Baalke didn't seem to be in a hurry and hadn't started contract talks by the end of January. Allen wasn't particularly impressed about the lack of urgency but negotiations fortunately ramped up ahead of free agency.
Ultimately, Allen's camp and Baalke couldn't agree to a deal so the Jaguars applied the franchise tag. While the former Kentucky Wildcat is guaranteed to make $24 million next season, he wants the security and peace of mind that come with a long-term deal.
Josh Allen recently took to Twitter to show his displeasure with his contract status. Hopefully, Trent Baalke took notice and starts operating with a sense of urgency. Once he does, he can check off a massive box and the Jaguars' best defensive player can focus on having another monster season in 2024.
