The Jacksonville Jaguars have been engaging in contract talks with Parker Washington. While they haven't been able to reach an agreement, general manager James Gladstone said that the team is willing to continue negotiations into the regular season.
Washington had previously stated that he isn't worried about his contract but confirmed that the Jags are engaged in negotiations ahead of the season opener.
Parker Washington confirms he's continued contract talks with the Jaguars
Parker Washington met with the local media days before Jacksonville faces off against the Cleveland Browns in Week 1 of the regular season. He stated that his camp continues to negotiate with the Jags.
"We're still having that communication, that dialog. I have updates for my engagement every day," Washington told reporters via 1010 XL (8:49 mark). "Having to talk to my family. You know, but for me, it's my job to come out here, stay ready to go. Just do my job, be the best receiver, catch the ball for Trevor, make plays for my team
Later in the exchange, Washington said that the picture of him and his agent wasn't an update.
"I don't know who posts first when something happens, but we're gonna find out together," Washington said.
For context, Washington posted a picture of him and his agent the week after roster cutdown day. At the time, that might've been a hint that No. 11 had inked his extension, but based on his comments, he didn't. Anyway, if both sides really want to get a deal done, what's the holdup?
There were rumors that they were $10 million apart in Washington's desired annual average. Based on the fact that fellow receiver Michael Wilson just got a three-year deal worth $75 million, it wouldn't be far-fetched to think that he's aiming at a contract that pays him an average of $25 million per year. That may be more than Jacksonville is willing to pay, though.
Early in the offseason, Washington was projected to earn a four-year, $64 million deal, but other receivers besides Wilson have signed extensions since. Specifically, the Green Bay Packers gave new deals to Jayden Reed and Christian Watson.
Given that Washington is coming off a career year, nobody would blame him for wanting max value.

The Jaguars are running out of time to extend Parker Washington before Week 1
Ideally, the Jaguars and Parker Washington would have already reached a deal by now, but the second-best time to get it done is before the regular season begins, as they'll prevent it from becoming a distraction.
For his part, Washington appears to be willing to be on himself to get the deal his looking for. And if the former Penn State Nittany does play the season without a new deal, he could raise his stock and get top-market compensation from either Jacksonville or another team in free agency. Having said that, he'll need to weigh the risk of getting injured without having an extension.
The good news is that it won't be the end of the world if the Jaguars and Parker Washington don't strike an extension before Week 1. But if they pull it off, both sides can turn their focus on being the best possible team in the AFC next season
