Latest Parker Washington update gives Jaguars fans a reason for hope

One of the biggest storylines surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of the preseason was whether they would be able to strike a new deal with star wide receiver Parker Washington. So far, they haven't been able to reach an agreement. The good news is that both sides will continue negotiations.

Teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Houston Texans (at least in C.J. Stroud's case) won't have contract talks once the regular season has rolled out. That's not the case with the Jags.

Last year, Jacksonville locked up wide receiver Jakobi Meyers and Cole Van Lanen late in 2025. Based on general manager James Gladstone's latest remarks, that will also be the case with Washington if they haven't gotten a deal done by then.

James Gladstone says the Jaguars will continue negotiations with Parker Washington

James Gladstone met with the local media a couple days after the roster cutdown deadline. He said that the team will continue contract talks with Parker Washington, noting that both sides have made encouraging progress.

"Yeah, there's been a lot of positive progress, a lot of good back and forth," Gladstone told reporters (6:10 mark). "As I think back to this time last year, Parker was coming off a really strong training camp, and over the course of the first half of the season, he had certain games really, really showed up and made a significant dent, and it was a little sporadic."

Gladstone continued, "By the time midseason hit, [he] started to feel his presence a little bit more and more. Really down the stretch in those first, in those final four games, his impact was notable. And he's carried that momentum through the offseason program and into training camp. So certainly love where he's heading into the season, look forward to seeing that show itself once we get into games, and for so many other people to see it. But really, in a good spot with that."

Later in the exchange, Jacksonville's general manager stated that the team won't stop talking to Washington and his camp.

"In terms of any discussions around contract extension or what his future holds, I think we're certainly in a position where we're not going to stop talking and trying to figure something out, and I think we've certainly not shown any unwillingness to do stuff even during the course of the season, as you point back to last year," Gladstone noted.

Washington is entering a contract year. He's coming off a season in which he hauled in a career-best 58 receptions for 807 yards with five touchdowns. Since the end of 2025, other receivers — Zay Flowers, Jayden Reed, and Christian Watson — have gotten extensions.

This, in turn, may have raised the bar for salaries at the position, and nobody should be shocked if Washington wants to earn a deal that reflects his status as the team's best receiver.

The Jaguars are taking the right approach with Parker Washington

As productive as Parker Washington was in 2025, he's poised to have a bigger role on offense next season. Head coach Liam Coen said as much, pointing out that the fourth-year wideout is expected to run more vertical routes.

Surprisingly, though, Washington hasn't turned negotiations into a distraction. Back in training camp, he said he was focused on being the best player he can be. The team's decision-makers certainly liked his approach, which might be why they aren't opposed to continue having contract talks into the regular season.

Worst-case scenario, Parker Washington will likely have signed a new deal by the end of the season, but if both sides continue to make an effort to get it done, perhaps they can strike an agreement before the opener against the Cleveland Browns.
