Since the Jacksonville Jaguars drafted him first overall in 2021, Trevor Lawrence has had his fair share of critics. This comes with the territory, and more recently, many of those analysts who weren't sold on him have changed their tune in light of his recent success.

However, some talking heads still refuse to give the Jags or Lawrence their due, even after trouncing the Denver Broncos. LeSean McCoy is among them.

LeSean McCoy isn't convinced the Jaguars have a top-10 QB in Trevor Lawrence

After the win over the Broncos, LeSean McCoy said that he isn't convinced Trevor Lawrence is a top quarterback, noting that his inconsistencies make it hard to grade him.

"The problem is you guys are prisoners of the moment. Every time something good happens, you have to jump on a bandwagon," McCoy said on his podcast. "I don't do that. The thing with Trevor Lawrence is this: he's the type of guy where he could be top 15 most trashiest quarterbacks in the league, and then on the very next half of the year, he can be a top 10 quarterback in the league."

McCoy continued, "And it's like, how do you grade that? Because you grade people that's consistent, and he's never consistent. So right now, he's on his great run. But if I told you to get to the playoffs and he stinks it up, you won't be surprised. So the problem with Trevor Lawrence is he's never consistent. You can't be a top 10 bad quarterback, and then be top 10 Best. It just, it's, it's hard to grade."

While there's no doubt that Trevor Lawrence has been inconsistent, McCoy's argument is flawed. He asks how you can grade a quarterback if he's inconsistent. Simple: You do it like most analysts; you evaluate his performance on a weekly basis.

Moreover, McCoy is operating in absolutes, so either Lawrence has to be good or bad, and the real world doesn't operate like that. Early in the season, No. 16 struggled, so it was right to say that he wasn't playing particularly well even when you take into account the drops and the poor protection he got. At that moment, he deserved to be ranked in the late 10s or even 20s because his play reflected that.

However, Lawrence has played much better in recent weeks. In fact, he's one of the top quarterbacks in the league, so you can simply say that he was inconsistent early in the season but is currently performing at a high level. See? It wasn't difficult to do.

The Jaguars have seen Trevor Lawrence improve throughout 2025

Things are always fluid in the NFL, and what looks like certainty at some point isn't necessarily true a couple months later. For instance, the Indianapolis Colts seemed in control of the AFC South after going 7-1 to start the season. However, they're one game away from being eliminated from playoff contention after losing five in a row.

Similarly, Trevor Lawrence entered the 2025 season surrounded by questions about his future in Jacksonville. Although it took him time to hit his stride, you no longer see analysts talking about the Jaguars moving on from him. Similarly, the former Clemson Tiger has once again joined the top 5 of NFL quarterbacks, and nobody, outside of a few loud talking heads, seems to have an issue with it.

The one thing LeSean McCoy is right about is that Trevor Lawrence hasn't been consistent throughout his career. But based on his recent success under Liam Coen, don't be surprised if he also takes care of that soon.
