Ranking top 3 position groups on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster ahead of 2023 NFL free agency
No. 1 top position group on the Jacksonville Jaguars roster – Quarterback
It took the Jaguars several tries but they finally found a franchise quarterback when they drafted Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Although the former Clemson Tiger struggled in his rookie campaign, he made a huge leap last year and is poised to be even better in 2023.
While Doug Pederson deserves plenty of credit for ‘fixing’ Lawrence, there’s a chance he would’ve improved regardless of who the head coach was (unless it was Nathaniel Hackett). With Lawrence firmly entrenched as the starter, it makes little sense for the Jaguars to use a high draft pick or look for an upgrade in free agency at the position. In fact, the Jaguars are probably set for the remainder of the decade, barring something extraordinary.
Lawrence started every game last year and played 98 percent of the team’s offensive snaps. Whenever he left the field, C.J. Beathard took his place but he ended up attempting 11 passes, completing seven for 35 yards.
Beathard signed a two-year contract in 2021 and is slated to become a free agent. Given his familiarity with the system and the rapport he’s built with Lawrence, the Jaguars should strongly consider bringing him back. Jacksonville could sign someone like Teddy Bridgewater, Sam Darnold, Jacoby Brissett, or Case Keenum to back up Lawrence but they’re better off going with the devil they know, which is Beathard, in case it wasn’t clear.
