Nebraska fans want Urban Meyer despite Jaguars failed stint
If you’re looking for a head coach who can kick start your offense, poaching someone from Sean McVay’s coaching tree might be a good idea. But if want someone to nuke your program and turn it into a mess, Urban Meyer is your man. But apparently, Nebraska thinks Meyer is good enough to help their football program return to glory (or as close as possible).
Nebraska recently relieved Scott Frost from his head-coaching duties and they need someone to fill the void. Fans of the Cornhuskers showed a clear preference during College Game Day.
That’s right, Nebraska fans want Meyer to be at the helm of their football team despite the fact that he made the Jags reach a new low in 2021. During his short stint in Jacksonville, the controversial head coach routinely made the headlines, and every single time, it was for the wrong reasons.
Meyer started off on the wrong foot, hiring Chris Doyle, someone who had no business coaching players, as the team’s director of sports performance. The Jaguars quickly backpedal the decision but that was just the beginning of what ended up being a taxing year for Jaguars players and the coaching staff. The Jags had enough of him by December and decided to kick him to the curb.
It wasn’t just in the NFL though. Meyer left a stain anywhere he went. He helped Florida earn two college championshis but left the program in terrible shape and facing several issues he himself created. Then at Ohio State, he shrugged off allegations of spousal abuse against assistant coach Zach Smith and lied about his knowledge of them. Again, he won but it came with a cost.
Can you blame Nebraska fans for wanting Urban Meyer?
The Jaguars thought that Meyer’s success at the collegiate level would carry over into the NFL, so they made him their head coach last year. Owner Shad Khan was so blinded by his illustrious winning record that he opted not deep digger and look for any potential flags even though a good chunk of them were in plain sight.
It’s possible that Nebraska fans recall all the Meyer did at Florida and Ohio State and they’re obvlivious (or don’t care) about all his past baggage. That’s the kind of things desperation forced you to do. After all, all red flags are just flags when you have your eye set on someone.
Having said that, it’s highly unlikely that the Nebraska Athletic Department will hire Urban Meyer just because a few fans want him as the head coach. Then again, you never know and if the AD is as desperate to win, they might end up making their fans’ wish true. Just don’t forget that you reap what you sow. The Jaguars learned it the hard way.
