No. 3 player the Jaguars could trade before final cutdown: Tre Herndon

Cornerback is arguably one of the Jaguars’ strongest position groups ahead of the regular season. Having a pair of starting corners in Shaquill Griffin and Tyson Campbell didn’t stop them from signing Darious Williams in free agency to play in the slot. Moreover, the Jags also used a couple of draft picks on Gregory Junior and Montaric Brown, and signed Xavier Crawford earlier this year.

Chris Claybrooks and Tre Herndon seem to be the top two backups on the depth chart and the Jags could trade either one due to the surplus at the position. However, Herndon might have more trade value than Claybrooks because of his versatility.

The Vanderbilt can man the slot and line up outside and he was set to be the Jaguars’ nickel cornerback last year. Unfortunately, an MCL injury in the preseason forced him to sit out a handful of games. He eventually returned but wasn’t fully healthy, so he was benched in favor of Rudy Ford and his playing time decreased considerably.

An undrafted free agent in 2018, Herndon has started 29 games over the last three years. The Jags brought him back in the offseason but it wouldn’t be shocking to see them trade him in order to give the younger guys a chance. Last year, they traded fellow cornerback Sidney Jones before the start of the regular season even though he had signed a one-year deal, and they could do the same with Herndon.
