No. 2 player the Jaguars could trade before final cutdown: Laviska Shenault

Third-year wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. has become somewhat of an afterthought on the Jaguars’ offense due to the arrival of Christian Kirk and Zay Jones earlier this year. The fact that he hasn’t stood out in training camp nor the preseason hasn’t helped his case.

A second-round selection in 2020, Shenault had a productive rookie campaign, hauling in 58 receptions for 600 yards and five touchdowns. This is more impressive when you take into account that the Jaguars had a revolving door at quarterback that year and three different players took snaps behind center.

Last offseason, Viska was seen as a candidate to have a breakout year and it’s easy to see why. He isn’t a burner but can get deep. Moreover, he excels at forcing missed tackles. But then, the 2021 season came and went and he didn’t show much improvement. He did haul in 63 receptions but averaged less than 10 yards per catch and failed to find the end zone.

Shenault was expected to bounce back under Doug Pederson but has mostly disappeared in training camp and the preseason. Against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he caught one pass for six yards and returned two punts. He muffed the first one and didn’t do much with the second one.

The truth is that it’s too early to give up on Shenault but it doesn’t look like he will get plenty of targets in 2022. With Laquon Treadwell and Jeff Cotton on the roster, the Jags could take calls from other teams. They already tried to trade him earlier this year and they could do it again.
