3rd best contract on the Jaguars roster: Tyler Shatley, IOL

Contract: 2-year, $4.8 million 2022 cap number: $2.15 million

Former center Brandon Linder was a mainstay of the Jaguars’ offensive line and one of their most respected players during his eight-year stint before calling it quits in the offseason. The organization wasn’t caught off guard though. They knew that parting ways with Linder was a possibility, so they signed veteran Tyler Shatley before Linder announced his retirement to potentially take his place in the starting lineup in 2022.

Shatley signed with the Jags after going undrafted in 2014 and had spent most of his tenure as a backup. However, he made 18 starts, many in Linder’s place, over the last two seasons and will probably open the regular season as the Jaguars’ starting center.

Keep in mind that this will be Shatley’s first training camp as a starting center. He might need to fend off rookie Luke Fortner but should have the edge by virtue of having more experience. Another thing working in the veteran’s favor is that he’s developed a nice rapport with Trevor Lawrence. Last year, they both worked with the second team in training camp. Moreover, they played several games together when Linder was sidelined.

The Jaguars didn’t draft Fortner to keep him on the bench. They will groom him to eventually take over center but don’t dismiss Shatley just yet. He’s a young 31 and still got several years of football left in him. So don’t be surprised if he remains in the starting lineup for the whole season.
