4th best contract on the Jaguars roster: C.J. Beathard, QB

Contract: 2-year deal, $5 million – 2022 cap number: $2.72 million

After several attempts, the Jaguars finally got the quarterback position right when they drafted Trevor Lawrence No. 1 overall last year. The former Clemson Tiger had an underwhelming rookie campaign but he’s expected to make a significant leap in Year 2 under the tutelage of head coach Doug Pederson. But if he needs to miss time for whatever reason, Jacksonville will turn to veteran C.J. Beathard, who signed a two-year deal last offseason.

Before joining the Jags, Beathard started 12 games for the San Francisco 49ers, the team that drafted him in 2017. Last season, he only played seven snaps and attempted two passes, which is what you want from your backup quarterback.

Beathard suffered a hamstring injury during this year’s minicamp but won’t require surgery and should be ready for training camp. Optimally, you want your backup quarterback to hold a clipboard and spent the whole regular season on the sidelines. Because if he has to take snaps behind center, your starting quarterback is either struggling or he’s hurt. For this reason, the former Iowa Hawkeye will most likely step on the football field in 2022 only if Lawrence is injured.

Nowadays, a good backup quarterback can charge from $5 million to $10 million, so you could argue that the Jaguars have a bargain in Beathard.
