No. 2 Jaguars rookie with no room for error: Kevin Austin Jr, WR

The Jaguars revamped their wide receiver corps in free agency with the signings of Christian Kirk and Zay Jones. Thus, it made sense that they focused on addressing other needs during the draft. However, they did sign Kevin Austin, Jr. at the conclusion of the event, and looking back, this was a smart move.

Austin missed the whole 2019 season due to a failed drug test. He fracture his foot the following year and was limited to just one game. After facing several roadblocks, the Florida native was finally able to suit up for the Fighting Irish in 2021 and he went on to put up some respectable stats. In 12 games, he hauled in 48 receptions for 888 yards with seven touchdowns. At 18.5 yards per catch, he showed he has the ability to stretch the field, which is one of the reasons he was such an intriguing prospect coming out of Notre Dame.

Unfortunately for Austin, the Jags have a well-rounded receiver room and will need to climb a steep hill to make the roster. Currently, he’s currently on the outside looking in, as most of the spots on the depth chart are already taken. Moreover, sophomore Tim Jones had a solid minicamp and will also try to try a positive impression in training camp.

Austin has the tools to play in the NFL but he needs to work on his route running and become a more polished receiver if he wants to make the cut. If he doesn’t, he will then become a victim of the numbers game.
