Jaguars get solid spot in AFC South QB ranking post-Carson Wentz trade
The Jaguars could knock the Titans out of this place in 2022.
Ryan Tannehill is a perfect example that players’ readiness is always variable when it comes to the NFL Draft. Just because a quarterback doesn’t have an impact right away, it doesn’t mean he won’t develop into a solid starter. Simply, some players need more time to find their feet in the pros.
The Miami Dolphins made Tannehill the eighth overall pick in the 2012 selection meeting but after six years filled with inconsistency, they traded him to the Tennessee Titans, where he’s enjoyed a career revival. While Tannehill isn’t a top-echelon quarterback, he’s been pretty consistent and the Tennesse has made the playoff every year since his arrival and even made the AFC Championship in 2020.
Since joining the Titans in 2019, Tannehill has completed 67.3 percent of his passes for 10,295 yards with 76 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. Those are pretty good numbers and half the clubs in the NFL would like to get that kind of play from the quarterback position. However, that may not be enough to help Tennessee get to the Super Bowl.
You could argue that Derrick Henry has played a larger role in the Titans’ success over the last three years, and once he went down last season, Tannehill and the rest of the offense struggled to put points on the scoreboard. Head coach Mike Vrabel has acknowledged that the veteran quarterback has to play better but he’s not blaming him for their team playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals last year. Tannehill will have a chance to show he’s the answer at quarterback of Tennesse but if he doesn’t improve in 2022, Trevor Lawrence could supplant him as the best quarterback in the AFC South. He’d better watch his back this upcoming season.
