Can the Jaguars beat Texans QB Davis Mills in the 2022 NFL season?

There are two ways to look at the Houston Texans’ 2021 season. On one hand, they had one more win than the Jaguars but two of those wins came against them, so they basically went 2-13 against non-Jacksonville teams. Former head coach David Culley deserves praise for making the most of the bad hand he was dealt.

The Texans were in a cap crunch due to poor decisions former head coach/general manager Bill O’Brian made. Also, they were without selections in the first two rounds of last year’s draft. To make matters worse, Deshaun Watson refused to play for Houston. Then again, he wouldn’t have suited up even if he wanted to, as he’s facing a myriad of legal issues, and won’t likely take a snap in the NFL until he takes care of them.

Without Watson, the Texans first resorted to veteran Tyrod Taylor and then to rookie Davis Mills. All things considered, the former Stanford Cardinal overperformed when you take into account that he landed in a less-than-stellar situation but it’s hard to tell if he’s the long-term answer at quarterback in Houston. While there’s a chance he hasn’t reached his ceiling yet, he’s a stopgap at this point of his career.

The Texans could roll with Mills at quarterback in 2022 due to the lack of enticing and better options at the position in this year’s draft but if they can find an upgrade, he will likely take on a backup role.
