5 potential cap casualties the Jacksonville Jaguars could sign in 2022
No. cap casualty the Jaguars should sign in 2022 – Michael Thomas, WR.
The Jaguars have been seen as a potential landing spot for New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas since last year and the connection makes sense on the surface. Jacksonville needs to get Trevor Lawrence weapons and the Saints are always in need of cap space.
It wouldn’t have made sense for the Jags to trade for Thomas last offseason since he got an ankle surgery performed in July and wouldn’t have been available during the 2021 season. However, things are different now and the wide receiver should be ready to contribute in 2022 even though he’s experienced a few setbacks in his recovery.
Thomas is set to count $24.7 million against the cap in 2022 and releasing him would create $22.7 million in dead money but New Orleans could designate him as a Post-June 1 cut and free up as much as $15.8 million in cap space this year. The three-time Pro Bowl nod has expressed his desire to remain in the Big Easy and restructuring his contract would give the Saints some cap relief but if they can’t reach an agreement, releasing him becomes a possibility.
If New Orleans decides to move on from Thomas, he would have several suitors in free agency and the Jaguars should be one of them. He would give their wide receiver corps an immediate boost and Lawrence would have a true number one wideout at his disposal. Last month, Nick Shook of NFL Media identified Jacksonville as a potential landing spot for Thomas if he becomes a cap casualty. Due to their vast amount of cap space, they could outbid other teams for his services.
