Jaguars can sign these 4 free agents if Rick Spielman joins the front office
No. 4 Vikings free agent the Jaguars can sign – Anthony Barr, LB.
One undertone of the Jaguars’ head coaching search that isn’t been talked about enough is who will be the defensive coordinator next season. Joe Cullen’s unit was inconsistent at times but played at an elite level at different points of the season. In fact, the defense played a big role in the team’s three wins of the year.
While it would make sense to keep Cullen to have some continuity on defense, it wouldn’t be shocking to see the Jags part ways with him and bring someone else to oversee that side of the ball. In fact, it is the most likely outcome. Regardless of who ends up running the defense, the front office may consider bringing in outside linebacker Anthony Barr.
A first-round selection in 2014, Barr has become a fixture of the Vikings’ defense over the last eight years. In that span, he’s participated in 98 games and 495 tackles, 335 solo tackles, 17.5 sacks, five interceptions, and eight forced fumbles. Moreover, he’s been selected to the Pro Bowl four times and is 65th in Pro Football Focus’ list of top 100 free agents in 2022.
While coverage isn’t Barr’s strength, he isn’t awful, and can also rush the passer. The veteran linebacker had to take a pay cut last season but he voided the last two years in his contract, ensuring he becomes a free agent this offseason. There will probably be a robust market for his services but the Jaguars should have no trouble making a bid for his services.
