Jaguars could sign these 4 free agents if they hire Byron Leftwich as HC
No. 4 Buccaneer who could follow Leftwich to the Jaguars – L. Fournette
Leonard Fournette was never a bad player in Jacksonville but there’s no way the Jaguars should have drafted him fourth overall in 2017, especially when Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson were still on the board. That’s on the Jags, not him though, as he didn’t have a saying in where he was going to go. The former LSU Tiger had a solid run in Jacksonville, logging two 1,000-yard seasons in three years. Even when he was released, it was only because the front office had found a replacement in James Robinson, not because he underperformed.
You could argue Fournette was a malcontent during his stint in Duval but former general manager David Caldwell didn’t have a good track record of retaining talent. He’s had no issues as a member of the Buccaneers. In fact, he played a key role in their championship run after morphing into Super Bowl Lenny.
Now, convincing Fournette to return may not be an easy task but keep in mind that the regime that moved on from him is no longer in place and while he may not want to leave the Buccaneers, it’s uncertain if the feeling is reciprocal.
After losing Travis Etienne and James Robinson to season-ending injuries in 2021, the Jaguars need to add some insurance to their backfield in the offseason. Lenny may be one of the best free agents available and one Leftwich could bring with him if he becomes the head coach.
