5 Jaguars who were potentially damage by Urban Meyer’s toxic culture
5. Jaguars player that was damaged by Urban Meyer – Trevor Lawrence, QB.
It’s not often that teams have an opportunity to select a generational talent, but the Jaguars did earlier this year and selected Trevor Lawrence with the first overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. You would think that the team’s brass had a plan in place to bring along the Clemson Tiger but it doesn’t look like that was the case.
Back in November, Jason La Canfora reported Meyer clashed with his coaching staff because they couldn’t agree on the kind of offense they wanted to run and how to develop Lawrence. Although Meyer denied he was at odds with his assistants, there’s was a clear disconnect.
Besides not knowing what kind of offense they would use, the Jaguars failed to provide Lawrence with an adequate supporting cast. Sure, the Jags had many roster holes earlier this year and they weren’t going to fill them all this offseason. Nevertheless, the team’s decision-makers could have done a better job of fortifying the offensive line and bolstering their wide receiver corps. They acquired a few pieces but they didn’t add many difference-makers this past offseason.
The offensive line hasn’t given Lawrence enough time in recent weeks and when Meyer was asked about it, he had no answers. The rookie passer has been far from perfect but you will be hard-pressed to find a signal-caller that is going to bail his team out without having much help.
Looking back, you could make a strong case the Jaguars wasted Lawrence’s first year in the NFL and that falls on Meyer’s shoulders. Had he had a better plan in place and the rookie quarterback were playing better, there’s a chance he would still be coaching in Jacksonville.
