The Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t one player away from competing.

It would make sense for the Jaguars to pursue Josh Gordon if they were competing for a playoff spot. Urban Meyer has talked about finding a spark that gets the team coming. The wide receiver could be it but there are other things the team needs to focus on.

Gordon needs as much help as he can to stay away from trouble. It’s not that he’s a child; he needs the right infrastructure in place if he wants to avoid being suspended again. The Jags might not be able to provide that support system he requires to thrive, and their focus is already on players that are currently on the roster.

Also, rookie quarterback Trevor Lawrence is making the transition to the NFL. Against the Denver Broncos, he completed less than 50 percent of the passes he attempted. The Jaguars may not currently be able to untap Gordon’s talent. He would certainly give the rookie passer a reliable target but the wide receiver wouldn’t be able to contribute right off the bat.

The team already has several options at wide receiver, so they don’t need to wait until Gordon is ready to play. While it may be a good idea to give their wide receiver group a boost, the Jaguars can wait until next year to make any additions.
