Jacksonville Jaguars: 5 questions ahead of final roster cuts
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a crowded safety room.
4. How many safeties will the Jaguars keep?
Could the Jaguars have too many safeties ahead of the final round of roster cuts? They spent the offseason revamping a unit that was a liability last season. Besides locking up Rayshawn Jenkins and Rudy Ford in free agency, they brought back Josh Jones and drafted Andre Cisco. This group will join veteran Jarrod Wilson and sophomore Daniel Thomas.
Of those players, only Jenkins and Cisco may have a roster spot guaranteed. Thomas showed promise in his rookie campaign and even started two games. However, he’s tumbled down the depth chart this offseason. Both Jones and Wilson are good-not-great players, and Ford has mainly played on special teams throughout his career. Moreover, third-year safety Andrew Wingard is also in the mix. The Jags simply can’t keep all of them, so it will be interesting to see who makes the cut.
5. Is this the end of the road for defensive tackle Taven Bryan?
The case could be made that Taven Bryan didn’t have the chance to make an impression this offseason after missing a good chunk of training camp and the first game of the preseason. The problem with that assertion is that he’s already had three years to live up to his draft billing and failed.
Second-year defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton moved ahead of Bryan on the depth chart last season and he’s now a favorite to start in Week 1. The Jaguars also traded for Malcom Brown this offseason and drafted Jay Tufele. Former undrafted free-agent Doug Costin could be on the mix to make the 53-man roster, potentially leaving Bryan as the odd man out. The coaching staff likes the Florida product but there may no longer be room for him in Jacksonville.
