5. Trevor Lawrence – Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback

The Jaguars have acquired several players that will play a key role in 2021 but none will have a bigger impact than quarterback Trevor Lawrence. You have probably heard that football is a team sport, and that’s true. Nevertheless, you won’t get far without an above-average passer.

Yes, teams have made the Super Bowl or gotten close to it with mediocre quarterbacks but they weren’t able to achieve success in the long term. That’s why it was a no-brainer to select Lawrence with the first overall pick in this year’s draft.

Now, finding an elite signal-caller is no easy task. Former Jaguars general manager David Caldwell had several opportunities to get one and squandered every single one of them. Head coach Urban Meyer and general manager Trent Baalke knew that even if they built a formidable team, they wouldn’t be able to enjoy sustained success without a franchise quarterback.

The team’s brass is aware Lawrence alone can’t turn things around in Jacksonville. That’s why they’re surrounding him with the best talent available. Many times, teams will expect their rookie quarterbacks to perform at a high level but won’t give them an adequate supporting cast. Last year, the Cincinnati Bengals failed to protect Joe Burrow and he ended up suffering a season-ending torn ACL. The Jags surely want Lawrence to avoid experiencing a similar fate.

Lawrence will face growing pains just like most rookies do but he will also make the Jaguars a better team. Also, he will also show why he was the top pick in the draft and help Jacksonville pull a few upsets in 2021.
