Despite the fact that the Jaguars focused on adding depth in free agency, they also made a few splash signings, including that of former Seattle Seahawks cornerback Shaquill Griffin. You might’ve heard that he’s overrated or overpaid. That doesn’t really matter, as the team’s brass felt comfortable enough to give him a three-year, $40 million deal earlier this year.

Also, there’s another cornerback in Jacksonville that should be getting more attention ahead of the 2021 season and that is C.J. Henderson. The Florida product experienced several ups and downs last year but he was showing growth until a groin injury cut his rookie campaign short.

The new regime likes Henderson and head coach Urban Meyer described him as a talented young man. However, he needs to pick up where he left off in 2020 and show the team has a starting cornerback in him. If the ninth overall pick in last year’s draft struggles, the Jags may be forced to thrust rookie Tyson Campbell into action too soon or rely on Sidney Jones, who has dealt with injuries throughout his four-year career.

Campbell could contribute right away and this may be the year Jones manages to stay healthy. However, Henderson needs to show he’s the playmaker the Jaguars expected to get when they made him a first-round selection last season. They could be fine without him but they are probably better with him. If Henderson struggles this upcoming season, the Jaguars might have to address their cornerback room once again next offseason.
