Jaguars hot seat: 3 players under the most pressure to perform in 2021
Will Jarrod Wilson be with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022?
Nobody will argue safety Jarrod Wilson has been one of the most consistent Jaguars over the last two seasons. An undrafted free agent in 2019, the Michigan product steadily worked his way up the roster. He has started 28 games on defense in the last two years after mainly playing on special teams early in his NFL career.
Although he missed four games last season, Wilson was still dependable when he was on the field. In fact, he posted some of the top Pro Football Focus overall grades among safeties last season. So why is he entering the 2021 NFL season on the hot seat? Safety was one of the Jaguars’ most pressing needs earlier this year. However, they spent the offseason adding upgrades to the position.
Jacksonville signed Rayshawn Jenkins in free agency and drafted Andre Cisco in the third round of this year’s selection meeting. They also brought back Josh Jones to provide depth. Even though safety might not currently be a position of strength for the Jaguars, it certainly is in better shape than it was last season.
Jenkins will likely start next to Wilson in Week 1. However, sophomore Daniel Thomas is turning heads in OTAs and the coaching staff likely wants to see what Cisco can do on the field. Wilson must show he’s a better option than both Thomas and Cisco. If not, he could hit the road in 2022, as he’s set to become a free agent.
