Round 1 (continued): Picks 3-6

No. 3 – San Francisco 49ers: Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

The 49ers traded up from number 12 overall and gave the Dolphins their first and third-round picks in 2022 and another first-round pick in 2023. You don’t do that for any position other than quarterback. The question is which one? Along with Mac Jones, Justin Fields of Ohio State and Trey Lance of North Dakota State are the other two choices. The Niners seem to be in love with Jones.

No. 4 – Atlanta Falcons: Patrick Surtain II, CB,  Alabama

There are a number of experts who have the Falcons selecting a quarterback with this pick. They might if they really like one of the two top quarterbacks left after the top three are selected to open the draft. The guess here is that they stick with Matt Ryan and look to improve their defense. The offense played well all year and held big leads in numerous games until the defense allowed the opposing teams to come back.

No. 5 – Cincinnati Bengals: Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon

The Cincinnati Bengal’s biggest need is to protect franchise quarterback Joe Burrow. If Trevor Lawrence is the biggest “no-brainer” in this year’s draft, Penei Sewell is second on the list.

No. 6 – Miami Dolphins: Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida

Tight end isn’t one of the Dolphins’ top needs while cornerback, wide receiver, linebacker, and safety are but, all of those positions are pretty deep in this year’s draft. Also, they five picks in the top 100, so they’ll have the opportunity to fill those needs. Pitts is the only tight end with a first-round grade this year and he won’t be there when the Phins picks again at number 18. He’s the pick.
