The Jacksonville Jaguars fortified their safety room this offseason by bringing back Josh Jones and signing Rudy Ford and Rayshawn Jenkins in free agency. However, they could still add another safety in the draft and could even do it with their second first-round pick, the 25th overall, in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Analyst Adam Rank of NFL Media recently wrote about what all 32 NFL teams should do in the first round of the draft and believes the Jags should target TCU safety Trevon Moehrig at 25. Rank thinks that drafting the cornerback also makes sense but thinks that Moehrig is the best safety prospect in the draft.

Rank also says the Jags’ choice with the first overall pick has to be Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence but that seems to be the consensus and you will have a hard time finding someone who thinks Jacksonville should pick somebody else. Even head coach Urban Meyer says that the team is headed in that direction.

Drafting Trevon Moehrig indeed makes sense for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jaguars can take many paths in the draft after addressing plenty of needs in the offseason. They could still add an offensive tackle, a pass rusher, or even a tight end with their second first-round selection but this isn’t a deep safety class and may not want to pass up the chance to draft Moehrig. In fact, the TCU standout seems to be a popular choice at 25, and with good reason.

In the last two seasons, Moehrig logged 20 passes defensed and has shown the ability to play in the box or drop back in coverage. He might not have the greatest range, but the Jaguars coaching staff would surely be able to work around that and put him in a position to succeed.

On the other hand, it might seem excessive to draft Moehrig at 25, as Jacksonville already has Jenkins, Jones, Jarrod Wilson, and sophomore Daniel Thomas on the roster. Nevertheless, the Jags ranked 27th in passing touchdowns in 2020 and should add as much talent as they can to their safety room.

If the Jags aren’t interested in Moehrig, they could wait until the third round to draft a safety. Richie Grant or Andre Cisco may be available at that point of the selection meeting and both of them come with their own set of pros and cons. Regardless of who it is, the Jags need to add another safety in the draft.
