. . Free agency. . player. 52.

The Jaguars could have a hard time finding a backup in the open market.

Before free agency started, it looked like there would be a handful of interesting names in the open market. However, most of them have already found a team and the ones available may not be an upgrade over Gardner Minshew.

Andy Dalton signed with the Chicago Bears and Ryan Fitzpatrick will be joining the Washington Football team. Tyrod Taylor, who isn’t a top-tier quarterback, but is a serviceable starter, signed with the Miami Dolphins while Jameis Winston stayed with the New Orleans Saints on a one-year deal. Even Nickelodeon MVP Award winner Mitchell Trubisky has found a new team in the Buffalo Bills.

The quarterback free-agent market is now limited to journeymen such as A.J. McCarron, Colt McCoy, and Alex Smith, who has previously indicated his desire to keep playing. The 14-year veteran could be the perfect mentor for Trevor Lawrence, but his days as an NFL starter are probably over and it’s unlikely the Jaguars would want to bring him at the expense of a roster spot. He could be a good fit in Jacksonville’s coaching staff though, but that’s a topic for a separate discussion.
