The Jacksonville Jaguars should stay away from Zach Ertz.

Ok, so Zach Ertz is not a free agent and is still a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. However, it may just be a matter of time before the team trades him or releases him, as moving on from him would free up $4.7 million in cap space with a $7.7 million cap hit.

Although it might not make much sense at first, there are a few reasons why the Birds would want to part ways with Ertz, who was a top-3 tight end in the NFL as recently as 2019. They are currently $33 million over the cap and need to free up as much space as they can. Also, there’s the fact his performance significantly declined in 2020, hauling in career lows in receptions (36), receiving yards (335), yards per catch (9.3), and one touchdown.

Although injuries and subpar quarterback play partially played a role in Ertz’s lack of impact last year, he should shoulder some of the blame as he dropped 12.2 percent of catchable passes a career-high. Before the 2020 season, the tight end and the Eagles’ brass were in talks of a contract extension but they came to an “abrupt halt”.

Looking back, Philadelphia dodged a bullet and now looking to move on from Ertz. Although he could end up recapturing his Pro Bowl form, the Jaguars should let another team find out.
