4 defensive coordinators Jacksonville Jaguars must pursue in 2021
Wade Phillips would improve the Jacksonville Jaguars’ defense.
Wade Phillips has a lengthy career coaching in the NFL. He began working as a defensive assistant for the Houston Oilers in 1976, and since then, he’s been the defensive coordinator or head coach for one-third of the league’s 32 teams.
Phillips was a good-not-great head coach throughout his career but has led some top-notch units. In 2015, he helped the Denver Broncos shut down the Panthers in Super Bowl 50. That season, the Broncos’ defense ranked fourth in points allowed and first in total yards. Also, they registered 13 interceptions and 52 sacks.
The following season, Denver finished fourth in points given up once again. However, then head coach Gary Kubiak retired and the team released all his coaching staff including Phillips, who didn’t stay unemployed for long, as he became the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator in 2017.
Phillips oversaw the Rams defense for three seasons and helped the team reach Super Bowl 53 in his second season with the team. Although he recently made his interest in the Las Vegas Raiders’ defensive coordinator vacancy known, he would likely be open to accepting other offers. Phillips has a proven track record and could be the right man to help rebuild a Jaguars’ defense that is in need of a makeover.
