This may be a battle for the Jacksonville Jaguars QB backup role next season.

Whether Minshew, Glennon, or even Luton play the rest of the season, the Jaguars have an opportunity on their hands. It is all but set in stone they will be selecting a quarterback with their first pick and it will likely be with the second overall pick in next year’s draft.

Whoever this Jacksonville team chooses will be immediately handed the reins as the franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future, which gives the organization an opportunity to evaluate the position and see who would be the best backup for a rookie signal-caller next season.

Minshew seems like the obvious choice. However, if Marrone and this coaching staff are relieved of duty, and a new group of decision-makers is brought in, they may have other ideas as to who best fits their system. Maybe the sophomore signal-caller would be the best fit, or maybe Glennon’s experience would be more valuable to help develop a young franchise quarterback.

Even Luton’s arm strength, stature, and youth have some upside and he could potentially be the backup next year. If this season has taught us anything it’s that the Jaguars are not stubborn when it comes to planning for the future and the rest of this season may turn out to be a try-out for the backup quarterback role in 2021.
