The Jacksonville Jaguars need to take a methodical approach with Jones.

The problem with the Jaguars extending Sidney Jones is that they don’t know what they will be getting. This is true with some players, once they cash in, they stop caring, or worse yet, they suffer a devasting injury and never fully recover.

Jones has already had a myriad of injuries in his four-year career. In fact, he suffered a torn Achilles in Washinton’s Pro Day a few months before he was drafted in 2017. It wasn’t just that year though, he got injured again in 2018.

While Jones might’ve left the injury bug behind, the Jaguars should err on the side of caution. It would be frustrating for them to give a new contract to the cornerback only to see him get hurt again.

Maybe the Jaguars and Jones could compromise. The team’s brass could offer the former Husky a one-year deal. If he gets injured, they won’t have a long-term commitment and could easily part ways with him. The problem with that approach is that they would be putting off the situation for a year. Also, if Jones performs well, this Jacksonville team will have to either offer him a long-term contract or opt not to pay him part ways with him.

The Jaguars have had a hard time finding competent cornerbacks in recent seasons and handling Jones’ contract situation may not be easy. The teams will have plenty of decisions to make in the offseason and re-signing Jones will be one of them.
