2. Tyler Eifert, tight end

Tyler Eifert was one of the few players general manager David Caldwell brought in in 2020’s free-agency period. As a low-risk-high-reward-kind of move, it made sense. The former Cincinnati Bengals tight end has been a very productive player when he’s been healthy. The problem with that line of thought is that it’s been hard for Eifert to stay healthy throughout his NFL career.

In eight years, Eifert has just played in 16 games in one season once. That was last year when he dressed up for every single contest but only started four. He finished the year with 43 receptions, 436 yards, and three touchdowns, not exactly Pro Bowl production.

In his best year, the Notre Dame standout played in 13 games, started in 12, and hauled in 52 passes for 615 yards and 13 touchdowns. However, that season looks like an outlier and not the norm when you take into account that he’s never caught more than 50 receptions besides 2015.

Eifert has been serviceable this season and has hauled in 15 receptions for 141 yards and one touchdown. However, he hasn’t shown anything that should make the team’s brass think about re-signing him.

In retrospect, signing Eifert was a good bet. The problem is that once Caldwell gave him a contract, he called it a day and didn’t add more playmakers. Putting aside the fact the tight end hasn’t been a difference-maker, the Jaguars should not have stopped with him and should’ve gone ahead and made a few more impact additions.
